Medical Laboratory Assistants
Medical Laboratory Assistants form the second largest group of laboratory employees. They perform specimen analysis in a chosen specialist area and undergo onsite training under the supervision of technologists and pathologists. After two years work experience, our Lab Assistants are encouraged to become Qualified Technical Assistants (QTA).

Medical Laboratory Technologists
Medical Laboratory Technologists (Scientists) form the core of the analytical services in each specialist area of the Laboratory. Our technologists are registered health professionals who have a Bachelor of Medical Laboratory Science (BMLS) degree.

Their role at CMDHB involves testing and reporting on patient specimens, in addition to maintaining and developing systems, methods and instruments.

Our technical managers and supervisors are drawn from this professional group.

Medical Radiation Technologists (MRTs) or Radiographers
Radiologists perform imaging services for CMDHB including:

  • Plain X-Rays
Are an image of the body that shows bony structures, soft tissue, bowel gas and calcifications to name a few.

  • Ultrasound
Ultrasound is the use of high frequency sound waves to form an image of the soft tissues of the body.
We perform a range of procedures including obs and gynae, abdominal, small part, vascular, musculoskeletal and paediatric.

  • Mammography
Mammography involves special x-ray equipment, using only very low dose x-rays to produce an image of the breast. Compression is used to immobilise the breast and reduce the radiation dose. Ultrasound is used in conjunction with x-rays to provide optimum visualisation of the breast tissue.

  • Computer Tomography (CT)
CT is a sophisticated, cross sectional x-ray imaging modality.

  • Special Procedures and Interventional Radiology

  • Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI)
MRI is a way of imaging the body that uses a very strong magnet and radio waves to view tissues, especially the brain, spine and soft tissues.

Phlebotomists
Our Phlebotomists are employed to collect blood samples, and on occasion, other specimens from patients either in hospital wards, clinics or in laboratory collection rooms.

While we prefer that you have previous health experience and specific training, a certification examination for phlebotomists is under development that will be recognised nationally. Opportunities exist for part-time and after hours duties to meet the demand from the clinical areas.
