Our secondary services encompass Assessment,
Labour and Birthing Unit, the Maternity Ward, and the
Gynaecology Care Unit.
Our primary services are provided at one of the three Community
Maternity Units or Middlemore Hospital for women who live closer
to the base hospital.
Maternity Ward – Middlemore Hospital
The 45-bed unit is staffed by midwives, nurses and health care
assistants who provide care for inpatients with a variety of
high-risk conditions, including GPH, diabetes, pre-term labour
and other medical conditions. High and low risk post-natal
mothers and babies are accommodated and cared for in this unit,
including women for Elective Caesarean Sections. the midwives
and Nurses are also focused on supporting breastfeeding and
teaching mothercraft skills.
Assessment Labour and Birthing Unit – Middlemore Hospital
Our 21-bed unit is staffed by skilled Midwives who provide
Primary, Secondary and Tertiary labour and birth care, with the
support of the Obstetric Team. Operative vaginal deliveries
occur within the birthing unit. Caesarean sections are carried
out in the Main Operating theatre below the Women's Health
facility. Lead Maternity Carers (Self employed Midwives and GPs)
utilise the unit to care for their women.
The assessment of women who are outpatients either self refer or
referred by their Lead Maternity Carer are also undertaken in
the unit. Staffed by Midwives and Doctors they carry out
secondary Midwifery and Medical assessment prior to admission.
Induction of labour is initiated within this unit.
Community Inpatient Maternity Units – Botany
Downs, Papakura and Pukekohe
We have three Primary Community Maternity Units within Counties
Manukau DHB, which are located at Botany Downs, Papakura and
Pukekohe. These Units focus on normal births, are midwifery
lead and are all Baby Friendly Hospital Initiative (BFHI)
accredited, providing competent and supportive environment for
breastfeeding Each facility offers water as an option for
labour and birth.
Community Midwives also provide full antenatal and postnatal
care at these Units. or in a shared care arrangement with
General Practitioners. Midwives on duty provide inpatient care
for labour, birth and postnatally. Self employed Lead Maternity
Carers (LMC) also provide care for their women at the Units. |
