    Arthritis Educators work with clients to help them self-manage their arthritis.  This may include a detailed assessment of their condition, information on self-management techniques, exercise, hydrotherapy, the use of physical aids and referral to appropriate health specialists or groups.  Local support groups provide regular newsletters, exercise and hydrotherapy classes, specialist groups and social meetings.

    Citizens Advice Bureau is a voluntary organisation providing free, confidential information and advice to anyone, about any query or problem. CAB is staffed by trained volunteers who can access information by computer or from the extensive range of resources held by each bureau.

    Manukau City Council has seven community houses. These houses provide a space where the community can meet. They are also places where programmes of events, activities and interest-based courses can be developed to meet the needs of the community.

    The community houses provide people with opportunities to interact and to participate in and experience a mix of either social, educational, cultural recreational & welfare activities.

    Otara Exercise: Te Puke Otara Hall, Mondays 10:30 11:30 and Thursdays 11:45 12:45. Support group for people with diabetes on the 4th Thursday of every month.

    Mangere Exercise: Nga Tapuwae community Hall, Buckland Road Mangere. Tuesdays and Thursdays 9:15 – 10:15. Support group on 2nd Tuesday of each month.

    Exercise classes and support groups provided free of charge.  The Trust can also provide group sessions on diabetes prevention on request.

    The Hearing Association offers free hearing tests & for a fee a more in depth assessment. The Association sells a wide range of hearing aids & associated equipment for the hearing impaired. The Association offers a free consultation & free in house trial of telephones for hearing impaired people, before you buy.

    The Parkinson’s Society offers information, support and fellowship to people with Parkinson’s (and related disorders) and their care-givers. They provide field officers, run support groups, physiotherapy groups and speech and language therapy groups.

    Presbyterian Support Home Care - provides a range of services to people in their own homes. This includes older New Zealanders as well as those with disabilities.

    Presbyterian Support also offers Enliven, a new home-based service to meet the needs of individual people, depending on their goals and circumstances.   • Royal New Zealand Returned and Services’ Association (RSA)
    RSA people rally to help fellow New Zealanders in need and war veterans in particular. RSA help is available at local and national level to eligible war veterans and their families, RSA Members and non-members and to the wider New Zealand community.

  • Residential Care Line
    This site aims to offer people information. The focus is mainly on people who are aged 65 years and over, who are considering the possibility of a move into care, or who are already in living in a rest home or hospital. 

    There is information on how to get help to stay at home, short term relief care for caregivers, as well as the systems around long term residential care. This includes entitlements for people receiving Residential Care Subsidy and Top Up Subsidy.

    The Royal New Zealand Foundation for the blind offers a range of services to people who are vision impaired. The Manukau Community Committee is a group that can assist sight impaired people to have regular contact with other sight impaired people.  Among other groups there is also VIEW (Vision Impaired Empowering Women, a women-only support network and group.

    Tai Chi exercises include a series of gentle, fluid movements that are good for maintaining the mobility and flexibility of the musculo-skeletal system.     The Stroke Foundation provides information and support to people with a stroke, their family/whanau and caregivers. A network of Field Officers and stroke support clubs assist the stroke-affected community. We also provide information through literature, videos and our helpline (0800 STROKE).

The University of the Third Age is run in conjunction with the University of Otago.  It offers community-based adult education courses targeted mainly to the wide-ranging interests of the over 50s.

  • Waiuku Volunteer Drivers
    Phone Grace 09) 235 9851 or Heather 09) 235 9798.

Waiuku volunteer drivers take people to hospital, clinic and doctors appointments.  Drivers wait for the client then take the person back to their home.  Clients are asked to contribute 34 cents per kilometre in petrol money.
